National Co-op Week & International Credit Union Day
October 15, 2018 - October 21, 2018
National Co-op Week 2018 – “Solving Challenges Together”
Co-op week is a celebration of Canadian co-operative and credit union members celebrated during the same week as International Credit Union Day, which is the third Thursday in October of each year. The ACCA will be embracing the theme of “Solving Challenges Together”, where Albertan co-operatives will be together to explore how to grow, share and lead the sector at the Gathering of Alberta Co-operatives annual conference.

International Credit Union Day – October 18
The credit union movement is steeped in a rich history of collaboration across divides. For nearly two centuries, financial cooperatives have encouraged people of every race, gender and belief to come together and give their all towards the betterment of their communities. It’s about people helping people. That’s why credit unions always offer a platinum lining.
This year, we’re celebrating International Credit Union Day’s platinum anniversary, a chance to look back after 70 years and be thankful for the lives and communities that have been improved by the unique principles and actions of our movement.
Be a part of this year’s celebration by using the hashtag #PlatinumLiningFound on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram to tell us how your credit union has made a difference, and you could win an ICU Day t-shirt to showcase at your credit union.
The History of Co-op Week in Canada
Co-op Week has been celebrated by francophones throughout Canada since 1958. In 1981 celebrations were held among anglophone co-ops in the Maritimes and Saskatchewan. The event went national in 1982 with the encouragement of the Co-operative Union of Canada, a predecessor of the Canadian Co-operative Association.
Co-op Week appears to be a uniquely Canadian phenomenon. In the US, October is Co-op Month, and the International Co-operative Alliance and United Nations have an International Day of Co-operatives on the first Saturday in July. International Credit Union Day, co-ordinated by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.
