Innovative Uses of the Co-op Model with Dr. Clark Banack
Join Clark Banack, Director of the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC), for a captivating overview of the March 2024 Final Report, Innovative Uses of the Co-op Model and Rural Economic Development Opportunities in Alberta and Beyond, at the upcoming Alberta Co-operative Conference - Alberta Co-operative Conference on November 5 and 6th.
Many rural communities across North America have grappled with declining economic opportunities and shrinking populations for decades. This session takes a proactive approach, exploring how new and innovative local co-operatives revitalize these communities, enhance service delivery, and strengthen local economies.
While co-operatives have long been a staple in rural areas, recent years have seen a decline in their numbers and an outdated perception of their viability. Clark will highlight three promising types of co-ops—New Generation Agricultural Co-operatives, Community Investment Co-operatives, and Renewable Energy Co-operatives—that are proving effective in retaining local control and stimulating economic growth.
Discover success stories from these co-ops that have increased local employment, retained financial resources within communities, and built social capital among members. The report also examines the successful co-operative ecosystem in Wisconsin, offering valuable lessons for Alberta's rural communities.
This session is part one of a three-part discussion exploring how local co-operatives can serve as powerful mechanisms for economic development. It showcases best practices and emphasizes the role of supportive government policies at all levels. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on fostering community-led solutions that can make a difference.
